In sports, agility is often used synonymously with running fast, but that's not all it means in baseball. Hitters and baserunners have to accelerate, stop, change direction, and regain balance in a split second. I look for three simple agility cues that appear in routes, breaks, and ugly swings on the move.
Use the First Step to Change Direction

I started noticing this during BP when I'd hit a firm ground ball and watch two different athletes run it out. The straight-line fast kid would pop tall, aim his chest at first, and sprint like it was a 60-yard dash. The kid with better ability to change direction would do something subtler: his first step went slightly out, like he was sliding off the line, and his shoulders stayed quiet for two strides. It looks slower until you time it, and then you realize he's already in a better position to accelerate smoothly.
If you want a quick check, stand behind the runner and look for the heel click. When someone lunges forward, the back foot often slaps down behind them, and you can hear it. That sound can be a sign that the runner is taking an extra step to get into position. A well-timed first move helps the runner get their feet under them rather than reaching too far forward.
This is where multi-sport shows up without a speech about "athleticism." A shortstop who plays basketball understands that the first two steps are about clearing a lane. A kid who wrestles tends to keep their center low and their feet underneath, which makes that first move to the side feel natural.
On the field, that same out-step shows up when a hitter breaks on contact and has to make a late decision. Is it through? Is it a chopper? Am I turning hard or shutting it down? If the hitter is only comfortable moving forward, you get the panic stutter. If it knows out, you get a smooth adjustment that keeps the head level while the feet do the work.
Watch How the Hips Turn on a Steal

I've coached plenty of fast kids who couldn't steal second base successfully, so I know raw speed isn't everything. One thing that separates them is how quickly they can turn their hips and get moving without losing balance. You can see it in the first few steps after the pitch: the good ones look as if they were pulled forward by a belt loop. The messy ones look like they got yanked by the shoulders.
Here are the three cues I watch from the first-base side, and they're all agility cues:
- Front foot direction: the first step should help the runner turn and accelerate without sending the body too far off-line.
- Inside edge push: the back foot drives off the inside edge. A flat, poorly timed push can make the first step less effective.
- Head stays between the feet: the head stays centered over the legs. When it does, the runner spends the next steps re-centering.
This is where a kid with a soccer background can be a problem in the best way. They've spent years exploding into space while reading a defender, and that slightly open hip position is normal. Same with lacrosse midfielders who are used to changing direction while carrying a stick. They learn to run without their arms flailing, which matters when you're trying to keep a tight line and not give the catcher an early read.
And yes, the slide matters, but even the slide is an agility moment. A good one is a decision: hook, pop-up, or straight in, based on the throw and the tag. If your runner can't shift their weight from side to side at full speed, they don't have options. They just go, and they just hope.
Look for Agility in the Hitter's Recovery

Some chasing problems are about the feet. If a hitter can't slow down and regain their balance quickly, they start cheating early because they don't trust themselves to adjust late. That turns into the classic sequence you see in a weekend doubleheader: late on the good fastball, so they start the move earlier, then they roll over a slider that never had a chance.
I see the same pattern when we do simple on-field work: fungos that force a hitter to swing, drop the bat, and move immediately. Think: slow roller to the left side, first baseman charging, and the hitter has to get out of the box and then slam on the brakes halfway because it's turning into an easy out. The kids who move well can stop without their steps turning choppy. They keep their upper body balanced, and they can speed up again if the ball is kicked away. The kids who don't have that ability either keep going full speed into a guaranteed out or slam on the brakes so hard that their heads whip forward.
That ability to stop is the tell. A hitter who can control that stop may also have an easier time staying balanced during a check swing, because both require the hitter to control their forward movement
Multi-sport backgrounds sneak in here. Volleyball kids are used to a hard plant and staying balanced for a pass. Tennis kids live on split steps and small adjustments to regain balance. These are coordination skills under a little bit of chaos, which is basically every pitch that isn't a belt-high mistake.
Next time you're watching a hitter in the cage, don't only watch the barrel. Watch the finish and the recovery. Do they land, freeze, and need an extra step to regain balance? Or do they land and look ready to move right away, like they could have to run on contact? The second one gives the hitter a better starting position if the game suddenly demands movement.
