All the Golf Clubs Tiger Woods Used for His Top Wins
Tiger Woods is among the most celebrated golfers of all time, if not the most. He has numerous golf records to his name, including the highest number of PGA tour wins. He entered the professional golfing milieu at the age of 20 in 1996, and within his first year of turning pro, Woods bagged three PGA Tour events and his first major at the 1997 Masters.
Since then, he has gone on to earn a total of 82 PGA Tour wins (tied for first with Sam Snead) and 15 majors (second only to Jack Nicklaus with 18). Astoundingly, he has the record for the largest margin of victory in three major tournaments, The Masters, The U.S. Open and The Open Championship. He is also the only golfer to win all majors with at least a margin of five strokes.
Undoubtedly, this extensive list of silverware and record-breaking performances puts him in the category of greatest golfers of all time. But with every great golfer comes a great golf club, which is why we analyzed all the golf clubs he used to win those tournaments. Beginning with the 1997 Masters through his most recent major win, the 2019 Masters, we found that some of his golf clubs and equipment saw success repetitively. Can you guess which ones?
Looking for a Pattern
A team of analysts at Golf Reporter went through the golf clubs Tiger Woods used in his major wins and found some intriguing patterns.
His configuration of golf clubs has more or less been the same. However, the golf clubs' brands, shafts and lofts paint a different picture altogether, with some Tiger Woods golf club brands seeing more success than others.
A Mixed Bag of Golf Driver Brands
Tiger Woods has used several golf driver brands over the years; however, four of them helped him win his major honors. These are Cobra Golf, Titleist, Nike and TaylorMade. He achieved the most using Nike drivers, followed by Titleist drivers.
He used Cobra's Deep Face with 9 degrees loft in his first major win, the 1997 Masters. Soon after, he switched to Titleist 975D with 7.5 degrees and won four majors with this driver, the last being the 2001 Masters. Then he made another switch to Nike and preferred Nike drivers for roughly seven years. He played with three different models, including Nike Forged Titanium, Nike Ignite and Nike SasQuatch, with a loft of either 7.5 degrees or 8.5 degrees.
Success With Nike Drivers
Notably, the most successful Tiger Woods golf clubs in the driver category are Nike SasQuatch and Titleist 975D. He won four majors with each of these golf drivers. (It’s no wonder Nike became such a huge supporter of him.)
Interestingly, he used only two shaft brands for his golf drivers in his major wins and three different models. By far, his most successful golf driver shaft was the True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 that earned him eight major wins. This is followed by Mitsubishi Diamana 83 TX and Mitsubishi Diamana D+ White 80 TX with six and one wins, respectively.
The 3-Wood Remains Consistent
While scrutinizing Tiger Woods golf clubs in his major tournament wins, we came across a club that remains consistent.
The 3-wood found its way into the golfer’s bag in each of his major wins. However, the 5-wood also makes an entry into his bag from 2008 onwards, beginning with the U.S. Open win the same year.
The 3-Wood Details
Tiger has played with three different fairway woods brands, Titleist, Nike and TaylorMade. He accomplished most with Titleist 3-wood that won him eight majors, followed by Nike that won him six majors. His most successful 3-wood model by a wide margin is Titleist 970 that featured in seven of his major wins.
Nike Ignite and SasQuatch II helped win four and two major titles, respectively. In the 2019 Masters, he played with TaylorMade's M5 (3-wood) and M3 (5-wood). He has only used True Temper and Mitsubishi shafts like his golf drivers, each making eight and seven appearances, respectively.
Tiger Prefers Long Irons Over Hybrids
Incidentally, Woods is one of the few modern successful golfers who play with long irons. He plays with an iron set comprising long irons, such as the 2- and 3-iron, and extends till the pitching wedge.
In only two of his major wins, the 2008 U.S. Open and 2019 Masters, he has omitted the 2-iron.
The Long Iron Details
Tiger Woods has played with four different irons brands beginning with Mizuno and ending with TaylorMade. Both of these garnered him a Masters win each. He also played Titleist 681 Forged Irons and Nike Forged Blades that won him seven and six major wins, respectively.
Surprisingly, he has opted for a single brand for his iron shafts with True Temper. He used the Dynamic Gold X100 for his initial wins and switched to the Tour Issue of the same model in the 2005 Open Championship.
Titleist Vokey and Nike Pro Combo Battle It Out for Wedges
As with other Tiger Woods golf clubs, Titleist and Nike emerge as the prime contenders for the top spot in the wedges category. Titleist Vokey design emerges as the golf pro’s most preferred choice for wedges, as it was with him in seven major wins.
Nike follows with its Pro Combo wedges that found their way into his bag in six of his 15 major wins. Interestingly, Cleveland and TaylorMade helped him win his first and last major titles, respectively.
Honing in on the Sand and Lob Wedges
He mostly uses the sand wedge (56 degrees) and the lob wedge (60 degrees). Like his irons, Tiger Woods only trusts True Temper shafts with his wedges.
On 13 occasions, he used the Dynamic Gold S400 shaft, which includes the tour version as well. He used True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shaft for his wedges in his first two major wins.
No Competition for Scotty Cameron Putters
Not surprisingly, Tiger Woods has chosen to use the most famous putter brand, Scotty Cameron. He played with Scotty Cameron putters in all of his major tournament wins.
More specifically, he used the world-famous Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS putter in 13 of those wins.
Making the Putter Switch
Initially, he used the prototype version and switched to the original version when it became available.
Tiger used its predecessors in his first two wins, the Newport Tel3 and GSS Version 1.
Nike Golf Balls Are His Top Choice for Most Major Wins
Tiger has used two Nike golf ball models in his most major wins. The Nike One Platinum and the Nike Tour Accuracy balls have won him six major titles each.
He used the Titleist Professional 90 golf ball in his first two major wins and the Bridgestone TourB XS golf ball in his last major win in the 2019 Masters.
Making the Switch to Nike
He switched to Nike in 2000 and used the Nike Tour Accuracy TW golf ball in the 2000 US Open win.
He was one of the first users of the famous Nike One Platinum golf balls, which won him the 2005 Masters and every subsequent major until the 2008 US Open.
