Eleven members of the Bena Tshadi team were eliminated instantly, and 30 others were injured by burns. The opposing Basanga team, who played on the same field, miraculously survived without any fatalities.
The lightning strike was an extraordinary happening. Congo is known for experiencing frequent lightning, and many areas in the country receive up to 200 lightning strikes per square kilometer annually.
