Len Bias (1963–1986)

Len Bias had a sudden death from cardiac arrhythmia just two days after being drafted second overall by the Boston Celtics in 1986. This was caused by cocaine intoxication. He was only 22 at that time. Bias was a gifted forward from the University of Maryland and was expected to become the next big NBA star.

Reggie Lewis (1965–1993)

Reggie Lewis collapsed during a practice session with the Boston Celtics and later died of a heart condition at just 27. He was already an NBA All-Star and captain of the team at such a young age. With averages of over 20 points per game, Lewis had a bright future but couldn’t live to achieve it.

Dražen Petrović (1964–1993)

Dražen Petrović had become a star for the New Jersey Nets and was known for his sharpshooting and fiery spirit. Tragically, he died in a car accident in Germany when he was only 28. As a native of Croatia, Petrović helped popularize international talent in the NBA and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002.

Kobe Bryant (1978–2020)

Kobe Bryant’s death in a helicopter crash at age 41 stunned the world. He was traveling with his daughter Gianna and seven others when the aircraft went down in Calabasas, California. As a five-time NBA champion and 18-time All-Star, Bryant’s legacy continues through his foundation and storytelling work.
