Best High School Football Player in Every State for 2023
There's no shortage of high school football talent from coast to coast and everywhere in between in 2023. While the very best of the best find their names splashed across recruiting websites there are always standouts who go under the radar.
It usually goes without being said, but today's high school football stars are tomorrow's big-time college standouts and NFL players — because everybody has to start somewhere. And tomorrow gets here quicker than you think.
Here's a look at the best high school football players in all 50 states headed into the 2023 season.
Alabama: Ryan Williams, Wide Receiver
High school: Saraland High School (Saraland)

Bottom line: Williams was the only sophomore on the USA Today High School All-American Team in 2022 after he racked up 2,700 all-purpose yards and 42 touchdowns in leading Saraland to the Class 6A state championship.
Williams is committed to Alabama and was also named the Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year, Alabama MaxPreps Player of the Year, and a MaxPreps Sophomore All-American. The No. 3 overall recruit in the Class of 2025, he put up 272 all-purpose yards as well as scored four touchdowns in the state championship win over Mountain Brook.

Bottom line: There was nothing Nash didn't do for Colony High in leading his school to the first Division I state championship in school history in 2022.
Nash had 2,656 yards of total offense and 34 touchdowns and led the state with 12 interceptions playing safety, including three returned for touchdowns. In the state championship game against Juneau-Douglas, Nash scored the game-winning touchdown with 17 seconds left for a 14-7 victory.
Nash swept Gatorade Player of the Year and MaxPreps Player of the Year honors for Alaska in 2022 as well as being named Division I All-State and the Division State Championship MVP.

College: Georgia
Bottom line: St. John Bosco's Peyton Woodyard had a star turn as a junior in 2022, as his school won a CIF Open Division state championship and was named Stadium Talk's 2022 High School Football national champion.
Woodyard seems like a future NFL safety if we've ever seen one. He was named MaxPreps Junior All-American in 2022 after putting up 53 tackles, one interception and seven pass deflections. Translation: He's that dude.
Colorado: Gage Ginther, Offensive Line
High school: Fossil Ridge High School (Fort Collins)

Height: 6-5
Weight: 285 pounds
College: Tennessee
Bottom line: Fossil Ridge's offense put up more than 5,000 yards of total offense split almost evenly between rushing and passing in 2022, thanks in large part to the skills of offensive lineman Gage Ginther, the state's No. 1 prospect.
Ginther, who is committed to Tennessee, plays left offensive tackle for Fossil Ridge but could move to one of the inside guard positions in college.
Connecticut: Ryan Puglisi, Quarterback
High school: Avon Old Farms School (Avon)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-3
Weight: 205 pounds
College: Georgia
Bottom line: Avon Old Farms High's Ryan Puglisi is the second elite quarterback to come out of Connecticut in recent years, following former Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis, a Middletown native who starred at Kentucky.
Just like Levis, Puglisi is headed to the SEC — he's one of two Class of 2024 quarterbacks committed to playing for Georgia alongside Dylan Raiola, the No. 1 recruit in the nation. Puglisi, who could also project as an MLB prospect, already seems like he can already make every throw on the field and will be an early enrollee at Georgia.
Delaware: Tristen Graham, Defensive End
High school: Middletown High School (Middletown)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-3
Weight: 245 pounds
College: Syracuse
Bottom line: Middletown High's Tristen Graham was an All-State pick as a junior and already has the strength of a big-time college football defensive end, which he'll be soon at Syracuse.
Graham helped lead Middletown to a state championship as a sophomore in 2021.
Florida: Jeremiah Smith, Wide Receiver

Committed to Ohio State, Smith was named a MaxPreps Junior All-American as the Lions won a state championship. Smith is the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation for the Class of 2024 and could be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft in a few years.
Georgia: Julian Lewis, Quarterback
High school: Carrollton High School (Carrollton)
Graduation year: 2026
Height: 6-1
Weight: 175 pounds

Lewis was named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year in 2022; he threw for 4,118 yards, 48 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as Carrollton went 14-1. Lewis already has offers from all of the nation's elite Power Five schools and seems like a likely pick to be the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2026.
Hawaii: Preston Taumua, Offensive Line
High school: 'Aiea High School (Aiea)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-4
Weight: 315 pounds

Idaho: Gatlin Bair, Wide Receiver
High school: Burley High School (Burley)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-2
Weight: 180 pounds
College: Uncommitted
Bottom line: Gatlin Bair is already the top-rated recruit in Idaho history — and for good reason. Bair had 73 receptions for 1,073 yards and 20 total touchdowns, along with 320 kick return yards. He's also one of the fastest high school football players in the country — he ran a 10.18-second, 100-meter dash in track, which is freakishly fast if you're not up on track times.
Bair also had 58 receptions for 987 yards and 15 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2021 and is rated as the No. 9 wide receiver prospect in the country. To be clear: He's a freak.
Illinois: Justin Scott, Defensive Line

Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-4
Weight: 310 pounds
College: Uncommitted
Bottom line: One of the most coveted defensive line recruits in the nation, St. Ignatius Prep's Justin Scott has been the best defensive lineman in Illinois for the last two years.
Scott already has the size and talent of a big-time Power Five Conference player at 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds. While he's known for his dominance on defense, he actually plays both ways for St. Ignatius, which went 10-3 and made it to the Class 6A semifinals in 2022.
Indiana: Mylan Graham, Wide Receiver
High school: New Haven High School (New Haven)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-1

College: Ohio State
Bottom line: One of several talented wide receivers on this list headed to play for Ohio State, New Haven's Mylan Graham shined in 2022 with 48 receptions for 1,149 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Graham's first offer was actually from Ohio State before his recruitment blew up — he's a talented prospect who could play in the slot or on the outside once he adds some more muscle to his frame.
Iowa: Grant Brix, Offensive Line
High school: Logan-Magnolia High School (Logan)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-6
Weight: 280 pounds
College: Uncommitted
Bottom line: Logan-Magnolia offensive lineman Grant Brix is the No. 1 recruit in his state and has some of the top colleges in the nation after him, including Kansas State, Oklahoma and Alabama, who all believe he could be a dominant player on the next level.
At 6-foot-5 and 280 pounds, Brix has the frame to add another 20-30 pounds of muscle.

High school: Mill Valley High School (Shawnee)
Graduation year: 2025
Height: 6-3
Weight: 230 pounds
College: Uncommitted

Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-5
Weight: 290 pounds

His younger brother Darriyus is a big-time college prospect as well.
Maine: Noah Carpenter, Quarterback

Carpenter, who also had 77 tackles and two interceptions, was named Maine Gatorade Player of the Year and Varsity Maine Player of the Year.
Maryland/District of Columbia: Dylan Stewart, Defensive End
High school: Friendship Collegiate Academy (Washington, D.C.)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-5
Weight: 235 pounds
College: Uncommitted
Bottom line: Dylan Stewart absolutely dominated up front for FCA as a junior in 2022, racking up 16 sacks on the way to winning a Class AA state championship. Stewart, a Washington Post All-Metro pick, is a five-star recruit and one of the most sought-after defensive recruits in the country.
He'll be scary on the college level after he puts on another 10 to 20 pounds of muscle — Stewart is someone it's not hard to envision as a first-round pick in the NFL Draft in a few years.
Massachusetts: Owen Howlett, Linebacker
High school: Milton Academy (Milton)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-1
Weight: 230 pounds
College: Uncommitted
Bottom line: Howlett was the only junior to earn a spot on the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association’s All-State Super 26 in 2022 after he had over 100 tackles playing just an eight-game schedule.
Howlett, 6-foot-1 and 232 pounds, also earned All-NEPSAC honors.
Michigan: Bryce Underwood, Quarterback
High school: Belleville High School (Belleville)
Graduation year: 2025
Height: 6-2

In 2022, Underwood threw for 2,762 yards and 37 touchdowns while also rushing for 632 yards and eight touchdowns. The kind of player Power Five teams think can come in and guide a program into the BCS Playoffs.
Minnesota: Koi Perich, Safety
High school: Esko High School (Esko)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-1
Weight: 195 pounds
College: Minnesota
Bottom line: Esko High's Koi Perich is one of several players on this list committed to playing college football for Minnesota — making us think the Gophers might be decent in a few years.
As a junior in 2022, Perich did a little bit of everything with 813 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns as well as 17 receptions for 353 yards and nine touchdowns on offense. On defense is where he really shined with 75 tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and two sacks.
If you need him in special teams, he's there for that as well, putting up 451 return yards and five touchdowns returning punts and kicks.
Mississippi: Jamonta Waller, Defensive End

Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-2

Bottom line: Picayune Memorial went 15-0 and won a second consecutive Class 5A state championship thanks in no small part to defensive end Jamonta Waller, who had 106 tackles, 24 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks.
It will be interesting to see how Waller is used on the next level because, at 6-foot-2, he's a tad short for a traditional defensive end.
Missouri: Williams Nwaneri, Defensive End
High school: Lee's Summit North (Lee's Summit)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-5
Weight: 250 pounds
College: Uncommitted

Weight: 210 pounds
College: Uncommitted
Bottom line: Rocky Lencioni shined on both sides of the ball for Bozeman in 2022, with 56 receptions for 966 yards on offense and a team-high five interceptions on defense.

Nelson's stats were split evenly between passing, rushing and receiving, and he was also named All-State by The Lincoln Star Journal. Nelson had offers from the nation's elite Power Five schools, including Georgia, Notre Dame, Alabama and Penn State, but chose to stay home and play for Nebraska.

Alejado was named MaxPreps National Junior of the Year, along with a MaxPreps All-American, USA Today All-American and the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year. He has 6,347 career passing yards and has a real shot at hitting 10,000 passing yards for his career.
New Hampshire: Exodus Ayers, Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
High school: Proctor Academy (Andover)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 6-3
Weight: 175 pounds
College: Oregon State
Bottom line: Exodus Ayers transferred from La Cueva (N.M.) High to Proctor Academy before the 2022 season and led his new team to an 8-1 record and NEPSAC championship.
While most colleges have recruited Ayers to play wide receiver, he's headed to Oregon State to play cornerback, and it might be a steal for the Beavers. After all, he had 12 interceptions with six returned for touchdowns in 2022 on the way to being named New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the Year.
