Best High School Volleyball Player in Every State for 2023
The talent level in high school volleyball across the U.S. is through the roof heading into the 2023 season — rest assured these are the college stars and Olympic standouts for tomorrow. We took a look at the very best high school volleyball players across the country to find out who the elite players were and picked the top player in every state before matches start this fall.
This group of elite state champions, All-State players and returning All-Americans are the best high school volleyball players for the 2023 season.
Alabama: Blakeley Robbins, Setter
High school: Bayside Academy (Daphne)
Graduation year: 2024

Bottom line: Robbins is Stadium Talk's preseason pick for Alabama for the second year in a row after Bayside Academy won its 21st consecutive state championship in 2022. Robbins racked up 1,479 assists and was named Alabama MaxPreps Player of the Year and MaxPreps All-American.

Alaska: Marija Wunnicke, Libero
High school: South Anchorage High School (Anchorage)

Bottom line: Wunnicke helped lead South Anchorage to a fifth-place finish at the Class 4A State Tournament, where she was named Defensive Skill Award winner for the tournament. Wunnicke was also named to the Class 4A All-Tournament Team.
Arizona: Evan Hendrix, Outside Hitter

Bottom line: There is something awe-inspiring about watching elite outside hitters under 6-foot tall dominate — like Notre Dame Prep's Evan Hendrix, who is just 5-foot-8 but still headed to play Division I volleyball at TCU.
Hendrix was named a MaxPreps All-American in 2022 after she had 557 kills and led Notre Dame Prep to the Class 5A state semifinals.
Arkansas: Tori Otter, Middle Blocker
High school: Bentonville High School (Bentonville)

Bottom line: Otter was named The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Newcomer of the Year after racking up 263 kills and 130 blocks. Otter, who is also a standout soccer player, was named Class 6A All-State.
She plays middle blocker right now but could eventually end up as an outside hitter.
California: Charlie Fuerbringer, Setter
High school: Mira Costa High School (Manhattan Beach)

Bottom line: The No. 1 setter in the Class of 2024, Mira Costa High's Charlie Fuerbringer led her team to a state championship and was named a MaxPreps All-American. Fuerbringer is on the U.S. U-19 Women's National team and is the daughter of U.S. Men's National Team assistant coach Matt Fuerbringer. She was also named Los Angeles Times Player of the Year.
Here's a pro tip: Don't be surprised to see Fuerbringer playing Olympic beach volleyball or hard-court volleyball in the future. She's that good!
Colorado: Izzy Starck, Setter/Outside Hitter
High school: Rampart High School (Colorado Springs)

Bottom line: Starck is the No. 1 recruit in the nation for the Class of 2024 after leading Rampart High to the Class 5A state semifinals by doing a little bit of everything. Starck, who is committed to play for Penn State, had 501 assists, 424 kills, 332 digs, 69 blocks and 51 aces in 2022 while earning Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year honors.
Starck was also named Class 5A All-State for the second year in a row and Colorado Springs Metro League Player of the Year.
Connecticut: Cami Wessels, Outside Hitter
High school: Southington High School (Southington)

Bottom line: Wessels led Southington to the Class LL state semifinals in 2022 by putting up 326 kills, 79 aces, 17 blocks and 99 digs. Wessels was one of two juniors named Class LL All-State.
Delaware: Taylor Holly, Libero
High school: Saint Mark's High School (Wilmington)

Bottom line: Holly helped lead Saint Mark's to an 18-1 record and DIAA state runner-up finish in 2022 — the only loss coming to Tower Hill in the state championship match.
Holly led her team with 383 digs and 39 aces and was one of three underclassmen named to the DIAA All-State Team.
Florida: Summer Kohler, Outside Hitter
High school: Venice High School (Venice)

Bottom line: Kohler was dynamite as a sophomore in leading Venice to a 22-4 record and the Class 7A state championship. Kohler's 332 kills led her team, but she was also stellar on defense, with 203 digs and 23 blocks to earn MaxPreps Underclassmen All-American honors.
Georgia: Sophie-Katherine Harvey, Outside Hitter
High school: Pope High School (Marietta)
Graduation year: 2024

College: Embry-Riddle
Bottom line: Harvey — Fifi to her friends — led Pope High to the Class AAAAAA state title and was named a MaxPreps All-American after she racked up 536 kills, 328 digs and 39 aces. She has already passed 1,000 kills for her career and should pass 1,000 career digs as a senior.
Harvey isn't the only All-American on her own team, as setter Cooper Abney also earned honors.
Hawaii: Cha'lei Reid, Outside Hitter
High school: Kahuku High School (Kahuku)

Bottom line: Reid helped lead Kahuku to the Division I state semifinals as a sophomore and was named Division I All-State.
Illinois: Ellie White, Outside Hitter

Bottom line: Michigan-bound White led Mother McAuley to a second consecutive Class 4A state championship in 2022 on the way to earning Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year and Illinois MaxPreps Player of the Year honors.
White was also named a MaxPreps All-American with 542 kills, 103 blocks and 28 aces, not to mention a MaxPreps Underclassmen All-American in 2021.
Indiana: Charlotte Vinson, Outside Hitter

Bottom line: Yorktown's Vinson was named a MaxPreps All-American in 2022 after she led her team to a 34-3 record and Class 4A state runner-up finish. Vinson should hit 1,000 career kills pretty easily in 2023 — she already has 820 kills through her first two seasons.
Iowa: Payton Petersen, Outside Hitter
High school: Dike-New Hartford High School (Dike)

Bottom line: Dike-New Hartford's Payton Petersen had a breakout season in 2022 with 515 kills, 298 digs, 51 blocks and 64 service aces as her team went 45-3 and finished as Class 2A state runner-up. Petersen swept Iowa's Gatorade and MaxPreps Player of the Year awards and was also named a MaxPreps All-American.
Both Payton and her twin sister Jadyn are headed to play Division I volleyball next fall — Payton at Louisville and Jadyn at Northern Iowa.
Kansas: Skyler Pierce, Outside Hitter
High school: Olathe Northwest High School (Olathe)

Bottom line: Pierce is the No. 3 recruit in the nation for the Class of 2024, according to PrepDig.com. She was also named to the MaxPreps Underclassmen All-American Team in 2022 after she posted 488 kills, 248 digs, 44 blocks and 44 aces.
Kentucky: Charlotte Moriarty, Outside Hitter
High school: Assumption High School (Louisville)
Graduation year: 2024
Height: 5-foot-11

Bottom line: Assumption High played one of the toughest schedules in the country, and Moriarty brought all the smoke, posting 383 kills and 353 digs. Assumption went 34-8 and made the state semifinals, while Moriarty was named MaxPreps Underclassmen All-American.
Louisiana: Camryn Chatellier, Outside Hitter
High school: St. Mary's Dominican High School (New Orleans)
Graduation year: 2024

Bottom line: Chatellier paired with All-American Ava Sarafa for St. Mary's Dominican as it went 46-3 and won a third consecutive Division I state championship. Chatellier had 402 kills, 281 digs and 32 blocks and was never better than in the state championship match against Mt. Carmel.
Chatellier was also named a MaxPreps Underclassmen All-American.
Maine: Danielle Emerson, Outside Hitter/Setter
High school: Biddeford High School (Biddeford)

Bottom line: Biddeford High went 18-0 and won the Class A state championship in 2022 as Emerson racked up 148 kills, 113 assists, 53 aces and 16 blocks. Emerson, already a two-time SMAA Class A Conference MVP, was also named Maine Gatorade Player of the Year.
Maryland/District of Columbia: Emmi Sellman, Outside Hitter
High school: Academy of the Holy Cross (Kensington, Maryland)

Bottom line: Sellman showed why she's one of the top outside hitters in the nation in 2022, as she led Holy Cross to a 24-2 record and the WCAC tournament championship with 339 kills, 50 blocks, 188 digs and 53 aces. Sellman was named Washington Post All-Metro Player of the Year, WCAC Player of the Year and Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year.
The 6-foot-4 superstar is headed to Ohio State to play college volleyball.
Massachusetts: Quinn Anderson, Outside Hitter
High school: Westborough High School (Westborough)

Bottom line: Anderson propelled Westborough High to an unbeaten season and Division II state championship, only dropping five sets the whole season. She was named Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year with 322 kills, 144 digs, 48 aces and 30 blocks.
She was also named MVCA Division I All-State for the third year in a row, and Westborough is 53-1 with Anderson on the roster for her career.
Michigan: Izzy Busignani, Outside Hitter
High school: Marian High School (Bloomfield Hills)

Bottom line: Marian High won its third consecutive Division I state championship behind a huge sophomore season from Busignani in 2022. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter had 531 kills, 403 digs, 49 aces and 45 blocks on the way to being named a MaxPreps All-American.
Minnesota: Stella Swenson, Setter

Bottom line: Swenson had 888 assists, 223 digs, 138 kills, 74 blocks and 49 aces as a junior in 2022. She repeated as Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year, while Wayzata High repeated as Class 4A state champions.
Swenson was also named Minnesota MaxPreps Player of the Year and is a three-time Class 4A All-State selection.
Mississippi: Emma Levingston, Outside Hitter

Bottom line: Brandon High went 43-7 and won its second consecutive Class 6A state championship with a pair of underclassmen named Class 6A All-State with juniors Emily Davis and Emma Levingston.
Levingston was a focal point of the offense with 401 kills, 50 aces, 30 blocks and 41 digs.
Missouri: Carlie Cisneros, Outside Hitter
High school: Liberty North High School (Liberty)

Bottom line: Liberty North High made it to the Class 5 state semifinals behind a huge season from Carlie Cisneros, who had 534 kills, 425 digs, 63 blocks and 31 aces. Cisneros, the No. 1 recruit in the nation, according to PrepVolleyball.com, was named Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year and is a three-time Class 5 All-State pick.
Cisneros is headed to the Pac-12 for college, where she'll play for Arizona and already has the school record with 1,237 career kills.
Montana: Leela Ormsby, Middle Blocker
High school: Billings Senior High School (Billings, Montana)

Bottom line: Ormsby's height makes her an elite middle blocker no matter what state she's in after she led Billings Senior High to a 16-1 record and the Class AA state championships with 285 kills, 22 aces, 66 digs and a staggering 166 blocks in 2022. Ormsby was also named Class AA All-State.
Nebraska: Lauren Medeck, Outside Hitter
High school: Papillion-La Vista South High School (Papillion)

Bottom line: Papillon-La Vista South High went 34-5 and repeated as Class A state champions behind a huge season from Medeck, who had 461 kills, 482 digs, 58 blocks and 45 aces.
Medeck, who has 1,147 career kills, swept Nebraska's Gatorade Player of the Year and MaxPreps Player of the Year honors as well as being named a MaxPreps All-American.
Nevada: Leilia Toailoa, Outside Hitter
High school: Bishop Gorman High School (Las Vegas)

Bottom line: Toailoa is the top player in Nevada headed into the season on Stadium Talk's list for the second year in a row after the Alabama-bound outside hitter put up 434 kills, 356 digs and 55 blocks for Bishop Gorman. Toialoa has been a MaxPreps Underclassmen All-American the last two seasons as well as a Class 5A All-State pick.
Plus, Toailoa helped lead Gorman to the Class 5A state title in 2021.
New Hampshire: Lindsay Healey, Outside Hitter
High school: Bedford High School (Bedford)

Bottom line: Bedford High won a third consecutive Division I state championship and pushed their win streak to 50 consecutive matches behind a huge season from Healey, who had 352 kills, 148 digs, 36 blocks and 36 aces.
Healey was named New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the Year and New Hampshire MaxPreps Player of the Year as well as Division I All-State for the second consecutive season.
New Jersey: Kalena Stavish, Setter

North Carolina: Kiki Horne, Outside Hitter

Bottom line: Horne was at her best for Millbrook High when her team needed her most, setting a state record with 27 kills in the Class 4A state championship match victory over Sun Valley High.
Horne finished with 522 kills, 220 digs, 44 aces and 37 blocks on the way to being named North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year and Class 4A Tournament MVP.
North Dakota: Raina Chwialkowski, Libero

Bottom line: Chwialkowski has been on the varsity since eighth grade and led her team with 694 digs, 84 assists and 79 aces, putting her past the 1,000-dig mark for her carer in 2022.
Chwialkowski was the only freshman named Class A All-State as well as being named EDC All-Conference. She's also been part of the USA National Training Development Program for the last year.
Ohio: Alec Rothe, Middle Blocker

Bottom line: Dublin Scioto High's Rothe was named Division I All-State as a junior in 2022 after she put up 341 kills, 80 blocks, 191 digs, 49 aces and 21 assists. Dublin Scioto went 20-5 and made the Division I state tournament. Rothe, 6-foot-3, is headed out of Big Ten country for college and is committed to playing for Florida.
Not for nothing, but Rothe could have also played Division I basketball. That's what kind of an athlete she is.
Oklahoma: Kathrin Rowe, Setter

Bottom line: Rowe's main position is setter, but she also played right-side hitter as she led Edmond Memorial High to the Class 6A state championship in 2022. Rowe did a little bit of everything and did it all really well, with 338 kills, 337 assists, 350 digs, 41 aces and 40 blocks.
Only 5-foot-7, Rowe was named Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year, Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Class 6A Tournament MVP.
Oregon: Alexis Haury, Setter/Outside Hitter

Bottom line: Lauren Hurst was downright unstoppable as a sophomore for Cleveland High in 2022, leading her school to a Division Class AAA state title with 647 kills, 354 digs, 61 blocks and 94 aces. Hurst was named Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year and Tennessee MaxPreps Player of the Year and a MaxPreps All-American alongside older sister Addison. Lauren has 1,163 kills through her first two seasons.
As good as Lauren is at volleyball, her future is probably on the basketball court — she's one of the top prospects in the nation for the Class of 2025.
Texas: Macaria Spears, Outside Hitter

Bottom line: The No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2025 and perhaps the best high school volleyball player in the U.S. is Prestonwood Christian Academy's Macaria Spears. She led Prestonwood Christian Academy to a 40-1 record and the TAPPS state championship in 2022 and was named Texas Gatorade Player of the Year, TAPPS Player of the Year, The Dallas Morning News Player of the Year and MaxPreps All-American. Spears' final stat line was 544 kills, 65 blocks, 50 aces and 225 digs.
The daughter of a pair of pro athletes — former NFL defensive lineman Marcus Spears and former WNBA Player Aiysha Spears — Macaria was named to the Washington Post All-Metro Team as a freshman in 2021 while playing for Flint Hill (Va.) High.
Utah: Taylor Harvey, Outside Hitter

Bottom line: Wagner had one of the all-time great individual seasons in Wisconsin history, as she led Oconomwonoc High to a 39-2 record and Division I state runner-up finish while earning Wisconsin MaxPreps Player of the Year and MaxPreps All-American honors.
Wagner had a staggering 1,075 assists and 114 kills to go with 470 digs and 95 aces. She will stay in Big Ten country with plans to play college volleyball for Maryland.
Wyoming: Maddy Stucky, Setter
High school: Laramie High School (Laramie)

Bottom line: Stucky repeats as Stadium Talk's best player in Wyoming for the second preseason in a row for good reason. Stucky led Laramie High to third place in Class 4A with 892 assists, 261 digs, 143 kills, 61 blocks and 37 aces.
Stucky, who has 2,238 career assists, was named Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022 and is already a three-time Class 4A All-State selection. She'll stay in her hometown and play college volleyball for Wyoming.
